Satire x Fairy Tale x princess x queer x Magic = I should have loved this.
The book is really self satisfied or kinda smug. Like look at me subverting the fairytale tropes. I’m being so self aware! Sometimes the tone was off. Aren’t I so smart for changing the rules.
Normally, I would quit a book if it wasn’t grabbing me by chapter 2. However, I stuck this out even though I wasn’t into until around page 174 when it got GOOD and actually interesting.
Listen - I finished it. I did laugh out loud at several parts. I appreciated the added queer scope that made it slightly more interesting.
I would try another one of their books.
‘So - for unknown reasons, there was a talking lion.’
‘I was going to get myself eaten. I could tell. It was just one of those days.’
