Aaaa I have now read all of Moshfegh’s published books!! When will we get a new one??

Homesick for Another World is thus far Moshfegh’s only short story collection. For some reason, I thought the stories would be more creepier than they actually were. Maybe I expected something like the vibe in Death in Her Hands, but the stories are pretty much about people coping in their life by pretending there’s something worth living for, A Better Place (as the last story of the collection is called, and which was actually a bit of a scarier one). But the people are filthy and nasty and unpleasant and they do filthy and nasty and unpleasant things to themselves and to others. They have weird habits and obsessions and are usually the ones who are excluded from society.

Moshfegh’s writing is so good, ruthless and visceral. But shockingly (as I’m a huge fan of Moshfegh’s) the collection wasn’t perfect, it just became a bit too much with so many stories. I usually enjoy collections with fewer stories more. If you loved Eileen, you might love these stories too.
