A great middle school thriller with humor, daring and justice. Told by the incorrigible Ani from the river country, readers learn how hated the river people are in the country of Keldon. Essentially scapegoats, they are blamed for all the country's ills, most especially for the deadly outbreak of The Scourge. Ani and her best friend Weevil quickly come to find that the deadly disease is less frightful than the true origins of the outbreak.

Ani and Weevil are a force to be reckoned with and their constants exploits and escapes will keep readers highly entertained and eager to see how Ani will triumph. Jennifer Nielsen delivers another fantastic middle school fantasy novel.
