The Institute by Stephen King
5.0

Disclaimer: I did listen to the audiobook so that may have impacted my experience.

This was my first foray into the world of Stephen King. As a reader with an all too vivid imagination, I have always steered clear of the horror genre. Reading horror is scarier than watching horror. Maybe that is why I chose to listen to the audiobook. The first half of the book drags on. Many stories are being told all at once and at times it becomes a bit difficult to keep track of them. However, as the second half of the book begins, everything starts to come together and what follows is a roller coaster ride. I listened to the last 40% of the audiobook all in one go. I was glued and could not stop.

I would not describe the book as pure horror. It explores sci-fi themes and some themes might even be fantasy. It intertwines them with current events to bring a story that all despite some outlandish claims could happen in our world. There are brief points of humor (quips that are mostly related to Donald Trump) that break the tension and make you laugh out loud.

Overall, it was an excellent read (listen) and I am looking forward to reading more material by Stephen King in the future.
