Young Mungo by Douglas Stuart

5.0

Full of familiarity and nostalgia, straight from the off this felt like a treasure of a book. So much of the language and culture was relatable to not only some of my own childhood, but to my parents and grandparents (my gran was a schemie from Glasgow), and the stories I grew up hearing.
The way time is used, although only spanning a few months back and forth, meant my heart was constantly being ripped apart, then sewn up with hope so many times over for a multitude of reasons. From intrigue to sadness, hope to horror, devastation and a whole lot more heartbreak, this was a really tough read.
Mungo is too pure for the world he grew up in. This one is sure to stick with me for a long while.
