An Enchantment of Ravens by Margaret Rogerson

4.0

I used to eschew fantasy that included romance, but I'm learning to appreciate it. This book was a bit sappy for me and veered pretty close to insta-love; however, I thought that the subject matter and flowery prose made it fit better than you'd expect. The pacing on this was odd; I'm not sure what I was expecting, but it felt a lot more like one thing led to another than a planned-out novel. There were several climaxes towards the end of the story and at the actual end, I felt a bit unsettled, keeping my eye out for another shift. Some people may find this refreshing; to me, it felt a bit unpolished.

I loved Rogerson's take on fae and the fair folk realm. It felt unique while fitting in with my imaginings and existing lore (for lack of a better word). I also love her ability to quickly give a clear sense of who a character is and make them feel distinct and complex even if they don't occupy much space in the story. I was a bit worried at points that it was going to veer into trite damsel-in-distress territory, but I never got that vibe. This book was a delight to breeze through and would work great for traveling or as a distraction when you're feeling down.
