Me: Elton John Official Autobiography by Elton John

5.0

Listened to the audio version of Elton John’s autobiography, narrated (in part) by Elton himself and (mostly) by Taron Egerton, the actor who played Elton in the biographical movie of his life - Rocketman.
This is an honest, raw, life story - filled with tales about his struggles growing up with an abusive father and drug addiction.
Elton’s first love, John, was emotionally and physically abusive to him… he was his first love so he made excuses for the behaviour until it went too far and he was finally able to let go. You wonder if this early romantic relationship echoes past treatment by his Father and him latching onto that, making him stay in something so toxic.
He’s even very frank and honest about (tw) suicide attempts. The main one being right before he played two of the biggest gigs of his life.

If you’re interested in “behind the scenes” looks into the music industry at all, there are lots of details into Elton’s career beginnings and how he progress into being the mega star he is today.
A lot of other musicians are name-dropped here, with some personal stories about them. Elton really got along with Freddie Mercury, not so much with David Bowie (a real shame to read!) Bowie just never seemed to be fond of Elton for some apparently unknown reason.
He also describes a, coke-fuelled, time where he took over playing the keyboard for a little bit too long at a Rolling Stones concert, outstaying his welcome past where they invited him on stage - annoying them in the process
