Zoo City by Lauren Beukes
5.0

"Zoo City" is an excellent read by Lauren Beukes. The novel has a dark urban noir feel to it, with a strong twist of fantasy.

Zinzi December is a young black woman with a "skill" of finding lost things. She lives in a ghetto called Zoo City where felons or aposymbiots live. Aposymbiots are felons who are attached to an animal. The greater the crime, of the aposymbiot the more terrifying the animal. Zinzi's animal is a sloth.

Zinzi digs through the dark underworld of Johannesburg to find a lost teenage singer. The characters are dark and well developed. The setting is brilliant.

Far to many things could have gone wrong with a story like this, but Beukes created gutsy masterpiece.
