Spirit of the Wolves by Dorothy Hearst

5.0

After leaving the Valley, Kaala once more has to prove herself to the Greatwolves. Will she be able to finally make peace between wolf and human after generations of hatred on both sides?

The third and final book of the Wolf Chronicles trilogy, and a good conclusion to this trilogy at that.
The first thing I'll mention without giving away the ending, is that the book ends on an...slightly open note. People are really whiny about the ending, but, to that I say, life takes unexpected turns and not everything will be pretty. I'd rather have a tale that deals with realistic things and doesn't portray the hero's journey as always ending exactly the way we want to. But yeah, just be ready to be surprised by the ending
This book is in general written as well as the other books. Not perfect, but still great. Maybe I have a soft spot for these books, maybe not, but I love it nonetheless.
The characters are as round as ever and we really see Kaala mature from a youngwolf into a mature she-wolf. We still have our lovable side-characters such as Tali, Ázzuen and Tlitoo, who are also well written.
The only complaint I could really have for the characters is that Marra ultimately doesn't really add much to any of the books. Sure, she's an ally of Kaala, but in the end she remains rather flat as a character and doesn't add much to the book.
I also still am not fond of Pell at all. He was pushy and sort of creeping me out in book 2, and he's even worse here, down to asking Kaala to have pups with him when she is barely a year old (normal wolves don't mate until they're older). I know Kaala had to grow up quickly with the situation and all, but he was really pushing my buttons. And it's also obnoxious that (spoilers) when Kaala ignores his advances, he pretty much instantly comes crawling to the nearest available she-wolf. I love so many of the characters of this series, but this is one character I'd rather see dead. Yes, even more so than DavRian or Inimin.
The characters are well-developed, at least the major ones.
The pacing improved. The book gets started quickly and keeps up the pace very well. The ending might be a tad rushed, but it also depends on the situation. You can feel the adrenalin in the situation over what is happening.
Also I'll say it right here and right now, I love the ending. I may be one of the only people, but I think it's a realistic way to end this series. It won't always be sunshine and flowers in life.
