Beholden, to be beholden to someone it could be a romantic or even tragic thing. This story feels as though it explores the romantic tragedy of what it means to be beholden to someone that you care for deeply, but that same devotion dooms you as well.
Roo is able to see spirits, at least she sees her darling companion that is Ruth. When Agens meet them, the two women's worlds infect one another and what brings joy may also bring dread.
This is a gothic tragic romantic tale of two women who find one another whose past and possessive loves may rip them apart.
For what can one truly do against the dead, when they have all the time in the world?
“My love for you is as strong as death.”
This story references The Turn of the Screw more than once, but it also reminds me heavily of Wuthering Heights as well. Through the movie Crimson Peak, the decay of the atmosphere and other elements is also brought to mind. There are a lot of parallels one could make to The Haunting of Bly Manor that was also based on the Turning of the Screw and others of Henry James stories.
