I don’t know what I expected from Ben, but it wasn’t this. From the book blurb, I was well aware that he’s not only a dominant man, but an actual Dom. Throughout this series, Ben has been the strong, silent, reliable guy. The responsible guy that everyone can go to for help or advice. The part of Ben I didn’t expect is the somewhat insecure guy who doesn’t really know what his place is…in his family, his community, his friends. That’s the Ben I fully fell in love with in this story.
The way Ainsley and Bennett initially meet is great. Her uncertainty with his feigned status. Bennett really looks out for her throughout that experience even if she doesn’t quite realize the extent of the buffer he was providing. Ainsley’s been through her own things which have obviously shaped who she thinks she is and how she feels about who that happens to be. She could have met no better man to discover the real her than Ben.
Ben and Ainsley have a wonderful pull toward each other. Their real connection is so subtle at first, they don’t even realize it’s so much more than their arrangement. They acknowledge to themselves (not each other) that their thoughts are always filled with the other, they even eventually acknowledge (again, only to themselves) that they care…a lot. Yet I still feel the characters didn’t truly understand the safety and security they gave and received in the relationship, at least not in the beginning. Ainsley was truly the first safe place Ben ever felt that he had, and vice versa.
