I was expecting a standard rundown of America’s most infamous hauntings, their backstories and ongoing mythology. What I got was a much richer exploration of the impact ghost and haunted places have on American society, past and present. Dickey also analyzes what various hauntings say about America’s political, social, and financial history. It does help to have some background knowledge of famous landmarks (or at least ready access to an image search engine) but Dickey provides enough description and context to keep readers engaged.
