Whale Talk
by Chris Crutcher
This book tackles of issues of race, abuse, justice, and the politics of high school athletics in a small town. Yes, there is language. Not the worst I’ve seen, but it is there. Yes, there is violence. Yes, there is abuse. The world we live in has these things too, although we avoid most of this if possible. I think avoiding these things and understanding them are different. I have lived far too privileged of a life to ignore the existence of these problems. This book, though short, manages to deal with these issues, have a story line, and by the end of the book you suddenly realize you are invested in the characters more than you realized. I mean, to put it simply, this is a book about a bunch of unskilled kids working for a letterman’s jacket. By no means is this the heartwarming tale you see time after time on the Disney channel, but everybody loves a scrappy underdog story. Especially when it accomplishes so much more than that.
