Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell

5.0

Today I finished my second read of Fangirl. The first time I read it was in middle school (six years ago). At the time, I gave it four stars and loved it very much after reading it in one day. Now, I'm in my first year of college and am giving it five stars. I was scared of not loving the book as much as I did the first time. Thankfully, since I'm now the same age as the main character, Cath, I was able to relate to her heavily. It's nice to see the protagonist be an almost exact embodiment of who I am. Cath, who is an introvert, a freshman in college, is a writer, an English major, sucks at love in real life but finds it easier to express in her writing, are all aspects of how she's similar to me.

The amount of annotations and quotes I've highlighted while reading is the most I've ever done this year. Fangirl has definitely become a comfort read. One that makes me smile and cheers me up. It even gave me the motivation to be a better writer since I'm on my way as an aspiring author. So thank you to Rainbow Rowell for writing this beautiful, coming-of-age world. It feels as if it was written just for me (and other people who relate to Cath, of course).

As for the characters, they have not left my mind all day after I finished. Cath, Levi, Wren, Reagan—my actual besties in a book! They're just so real to me that I refuse they're ACTUALLY fictional. In a way, they give me support in life and I love them for that.

Speaking of Rainbow Rowell, I need to get to more of her books. The only other book I've read by her is Eleanor & Park (which I also read in middle school), I might re-read that too. I own Attachments so that actually might be my next read. The second volume of the Fangirl manga is releasing later this year. That's my sign to get to reading the first one ASAP. I'm BEYOND excited to see my favorite characters come to life on paper.

p.s. I'm 100000% positive Levi is my number one book boyfriend now. He's everything I look for in a guy—like come on, he loves it when Cath reads to him. I'd like a Levi for myself thank you very much.
