A heartbreaking story of resilience and survival.

I almost DNF this book as I found the heaviness to be at times overwhelming. I found myself thinking about and carrying the protagonist’s grief and pain day-to-day and found in particular one of the recounts of violence to be unnecessarily graphic and brutal. It was definitely not an easy read, emotionally. Please be aware of TWs and do not read if you have sensitivity to any of these.

I found this story to ultimately be one of strength and healing. Of facing one’s pain and finding freedom in doing so. I do wish we had seen Alethea choose to fight for herself and show some autonomy in creating her happy ending, but I suppose this is not always a realistic path for somebody in her position.
