Gunmetal Magic by Ilona Andrews
5.0
When I first heard Andrea was getting her own novel I was a little nervous. I'd previously read a short story involving Andrea which was interesting, but not as engaging as other stories from the Kate Daniels world. But with the teasers we were given and all the build-up before release, I was desperate to get my hands on 'Gunmetal Magic'. I'm so happy to say that I could not put the book down and I shouldn't have doubted that Ilona Andrews would produce such as amazing book to add to my favourite series.
Set in the Kate Daniels world, 'Gunmetal Magic' tells the story of best friend, Andrea Nash, as she struggles to find her place in supernatural Atlanta. Andrea has had some trouble with this in the past, torn between her nature as beastkin - an outcast shapeshifter - and her values as a law enforcer; Andrea is put in a tricky situation and must finally accept that her shapeshifter side, and the Atlanta Pack, holds more chances for a happy life. I was so glad we got to see Andrea work out her issues. While I love that Andrea doesn't bend to expectations and demands, her stubborn side does cause problems and I was getting worried about her chances for happiness. There are only so many times you can push opportunities away and hope they'll come back again.
When four shapeshifters are found dead from snake bites in a Pack owned building, Andrea is asked to look into the mystery of their deaths. With the only lead she has being a short list of other people interested in the Pack's building, Andrea is sent on a crazy journey to discover what happened to the shapeshifters. You would think this is a tricky task, but nearly all problems that pop up in Atlanta involve something magical, so I was prepared for Andrea to explore a fair bit of the magical community. Like all Kate Daniels books, 'Gunmetal Magic' involves a lot of mythology. I love this part of the series, exploring new myths, religions and cultures that you don't often see in paranormal books. This time around, we come across a God problem - defeated Egyptian Gods trying to be resurrected. When gods are involved, there's always going to be trouble; but it's fun, exciting and definitely worth reading.
The hardest part of this book was the romance. We've seen Andrea and Raphael in good and bad times throughout the main Kate Daniels storyline and now we're back to seeing them try to work out their issues. I love Andrea and Raphael together. Both shapeshifters of the same series, they fit so well. But issues have to be resolved and when you have two stubborn people who have been hurt in the past it's hard to pick up the pieces immediately. I adored the flirting, arguing - the tension! Ilona Andrews can create amazing dialogue that makes me smile and wish for more.
And I can't finish this review without mentioning Kate and Curran. Not a major part of the storyline, as they were dealing with their own magical issues at the same time (which can be read in 'Magic Gifts') but they did pop up occasionally and I loved every moment of it. I miss Kate and Curran, they are my UF It-Couple!
Fantastic book. I can't get enough of this series and I'm looking forward to more spin-off books in the future.
