Once & Future, Vol. 1: The King is Undead
by Kieron Gillen
I will have to wait to see what happens when I finish this series. I like parts of all of Kieron Gillen's books that I have read but with significant reservations. Wicked and Divine was a fascinating idea but I found myself hating all of the characters. I like Duncan and Rose but don't really like Bridgitte/Gran. I like her more as the series goes along but her and Elaine are of a piece as well as Bridgitte's husband. Obviously if everyone is likeable and well adjusted there's not a whole lot of plot but, there's got to be a way to have characters be flawed and complicated and still likeable. Whatever. It's an intriguing idea, what if having stories/myths/legends come to life is a horror story rather than something magical and inspiring. Which is my other issue with the series. *SPOILERS* All of the characters that come to life either in the real world or the Otherworld are evil and violent. The issue with this--and again, maybe this will change once I finish the series--is that a not insignificant plot point is that there are innumerable versions of the same stories and characters. Why then would they ALL be bent on murder and conquest? That the series has me asking questions and thinking about it this much is good. If it were merely mediocre or bad I wouldn't have much to say.
