Letters from Rifka
by Karen Hesse
This was a very endearing, epistolary middle-grade that takes place during 1919, following young Rifka and her family as they flee Russia to find freedom in America. It's hard not to love Rifka as you read the letters she writes to her friend in the margins of her poetry book during her journey, and experience her bravery and wit while hiding on trains, during illness, separation from her family, and on the long ship ride to America where she hopes her family is waiting for her. A truly great story, I recommend it for all age groups.
