Tyll by Daniel Kehlmann
5.0

So this was a case of reading a book at exactly the right time. There is a lot going on in this book, but thanks to fortuitous circumstances, I had context for a lot of it, and I think it made the book even better. Set during the thirty years war, it is not the story of Till Eulenspiegel. Kehlmann paints an excellent picture of the time and the people, and his writing is so *good*. He can write about terrible things in a way that doesn’t feel gratuitous but instead leaves room for the reader to fill in their truth. And he can capture people, and the German language. I’m very glad I read this.
