This is the book that inspired the Showtime series. I enjoyed it very much. Several of the characters are different in the book from the series, but that wasn't confusing for me as they are fully realized in the book. Some of the revelations in the book about Dexter's past are not revealed in the series into later seasons and the first season of the series (concerning Dexter's brother) is padded compared to the book, but that was necessary to make the story fill a complete season.

I plan to read the rest of the books in the series by Jeff Lindsay as I enjoyed his take on Dexter and friends as much as I have been enjoying the Showtime series version of Dexter and the supporting characters.
