Claire's Apocalypse : A Zombie Science Fiction Horror Short Story by K.T. Rose

4.0

"The creation came from Claire's mind; she's the true genius that brought it to life."

Summary: Claire has created a bioweapon unlike anything seen before: a quick-acting virus with a 100% mortality rate. When she is instructed to get rid of it, she decides to take matters into her own hands.

Thank you to Blackthorn Book Tours for sending me a copy of this short story. When I first saw the small wordcount, I was both intrigued and unsure; to pull together a rounded story in such a small number of words is a tough feat, but Rose did a fantastic job. It felt very much like a piece that would sit perfectly in an anthology, but it works as a standalone as well.

Rose also took a rather common zombie trope (scientist creates bad disease, what if it gets out?) and by focusing on the scientist who created it and her inflexible hubris, it was both unique and strangely apt for the happenings in the world today.

I really enjoyed Rose's writing style, and she will definitely be an author I will read in the future. With how well she handled this story, I would love to see what she brings to a full-length novel.
