Devastating, beautiful, elegant. The way history and lore and woven into this queer, anti-colonial narrative is incredible. Looking at the lives of queer people without language for queerness, exploring the power of women in a society that systematically values them only as wombs... it's an incredible story about all the beautiful and terrible things we do for love, about complicity and guilt, about acceptance (of self and others), about challenging the prejudiced narratives we grow up with.
The only reason this isn't a full 5 stars isthat Herla dies , but I think it was handled well and doesn't count as a "Bury Your Gays" trope.
