The Guardian by Elizabetta Holcomb

Overall this book fell flat. I really wanted to like this book since I was given an ARC by the author, and people on Instagram were saying really good things, but I just couldn't like it. I found the writing style really easy to read, and I quickly read through the beginning of the book. I was captured by the writing, but there were too many parts to the story that were not explained. It was partially set historically, but the readers didn't get immersed in one specific history since other time periods were muddled together. It was difficult to learn much that was historically accurate. The main characters were interesting, but I didn't feel like their meeting was believable enough to fit with the plot and there was instant love going on. I liked that the author included characters with autism, but their portrayals seemed very stereotypical and the language used to describe was outdated and slightly offensive. The author seems genuinely interested in having diverse characters, but the story seemed to be trying to cover too much and missed the mark.
