Let Me Tell You What I Mean
by Joan Didion
Joan is a very precise and factual writer. This means that she writes with great accuracy. However, it also means that she’s quite intolerable when she’s writing about something I don’t care very much about, which she often seems to be doing. Many writers dot their writing with poetry and emotion that can turn the mundane into something beautiful. Joan does not strive to do this.
In her final essay on Martha Stewart, however, I find her comments intelligent and insightful though they should really be quite simple. Made the entire book for me — I had to sit for twenty minutes just taking it in. I would not trust her to pen a moving memoir, but I would definitely trust her to write a blistering movie review.
