White Bird by R.J. Palacio

5.0

Wow. What an impressive WW2 story told as a graphic novel. And by "impressive" I mean it left a lasting impression on me. The story was lovingly written by RJ Palacio. The characters were gently created to make you feel big feelings. And it absolutely gives you pause to think about the cruel captivity and genocide of humans. "Evil will only be stopped when good people put an end to it." Those of us who have read The Diary of Anne Frank will identify the power of a first person Jewish narrator in White Bird. And because it is a Wonder story, kindness as a theme wraps it all up. "It takes courage to be kind. But in those days, when such kindness could cost you everything--your freedom, your life--kindness becomes a miracle."
