4:50 from Paddington

Great fun, most unlikely and yet compelling in its own way.
Our story begins with Miss Marple’s friend, Elspeth McGillicuddy, travelling by train and glimpsing, from her carriage, a murder. She reports her concerns and yet she is written off as a fanciful lady. When she tells her friend what she believes she witnessed, Miss Marple takes her seriously. Investigations get underway, but no body is found and nobody reports a murder.
The story could have ended there, but for the sheer bloody-mindedness of our amateur sleuth. She carries out her own investigations into the train/route and believes there is more to this than meets the eye.
Using her connections, Miss Marple finds a young woman to help her. A cunning ruse is set up by which Miss Marple and her companion find themselves living temporarily in the village where they believe something is hidden.
Miss Lucy, the woman who takes on the sleuthing here, finds herself working at Rutherford Hall. There is more to this than meets the eye and, all too soon, we have a body, poisonings, mysterious marriages and wills.
Of course, Miss Marple cracks the case.
I, as ever, was totally sidetracked by the alternative plots. The reality was as dull as you could have predicted, but the journey to our discovery was most entertaining.
