A Canticle for Leibowitz
by Walter M. Miller, Jr.
This is the sort of book I wish I'd read in school sometime. You know what I mean--A Canticle for Leibowitz is riddled with messages and lessons, observations and satire. But while the basic ideology shines through with ease, it is also clear that Miller is saying a great deal more in subtler ways that can only be elucidated with time, study, thought, and reflection.
Do not read this book casually, as I did. Read it with access to Internet, with free time on your hands, and with an interest in philosophy and deep thinking. Plan to reread it sometime in a few years. Plan to discuss it on message boards or at a book club. Or else I might as well save you some time and tell you that atomic bombs are bad, and humanity just might be inherently evil.
