Ooof, this was a hefty read for a non-academic and lazy reader like myself. On one hand, this book is an incredible account of the Crafts and showcases their courageous journey across decades.

The research for this book was clearly a massive project. There are a lot of important historical and biographical details that the author painstakingly weaves throughout the extended timeline of the Crafts' lives. I learned a lot about this terrible time and appreciated the references to their problematic Canadian experience alongside their time in the US and England.

But even though I loved learning about the Crafts, there were elements that made this a tough read. There was an effort to evoke authentic dialogue with direct quotations but I found it hard sometimes to keep up with the dialogue style along with the formal narrative. There were a lot of tangential characters with detailed historical profiles, which again I understand helps paint the picture of the community around the Crafts but made it hard to follow along sometimes.
