The Night Watch
by Sarah Waters
Ultimately disliked the device used of jumping around to witness the characters three separate years. There was an unevenness to the time Waters spends on particular stories and moments. Some wonderful and powerful moments, glimpses at how war and secrecy alike can tear at a person, but here, unlike in other Waters' works that I've loved, the structure takes away from the overall impact. I usually love Waters' ability to create an entire world in my head through her dense language, but in Night Watch there are bits that are a bit of a slog, and the time jumps confuse and lessen the impact rather than heighten it.
