The House on the Borderland and Other Novels by William Hope Hodgson, China MiƩville

4.0

Nicely-presented collection, though House On the Borderland is so much better than the other three novels here that there's really no contest. Boats of the "Glen Carrig" and The Ghost Pirates are slow-paced seafaring yarns which are competent but not exceptional, whilst The Night Land is utterly overrated, with the confusing faux-archaic prose style disguising the fact that there just ain't that much to it.

For my money, if you wanted a real "Best of Hodgson" collection, you'd just compile House On the Borderland and the Carnacki the Ghost-Finder stories. However, this will at least let you dip into Hodgson's other major novels, even if on balance they don't quite have the staying power of his best work.
