The Racketeer
by John Grisham
Not one of my favorite Grisham books. The main character was a total jerk - ok, he was wrongly accused and spent time in prison and became estranged from his wife and kid for only being guilty by association - but the lengths he goes to, throwing morality out the window and stepping on a lot of toes to secure his freedom and slake his greed was over the top. He gets the all-too-willing girl and the gold (literally) without taking any lumps himself - not much of a hero. Mitch McDeere and Jake Brigance, where are y'all when we need you?
