The first part of the book was extremely unsettling (I will never look at chimneys the same), and I could not stop reading. The eerie, witchy vibes paired with Pearce's lyrical writing made for a fantastic opening of a tale of a haunted/cursed girl. We lost the eerie midway and it felt more like a recycled demonic possession movie. The end had shades of Shirley Jackson but without the jaw-dropping conclusion (though there were some turns taken that surprised me). Granted, I don't need endings tied up in a bow, but there were several loose ends that I wanted concluded. I would read this again knowing what I now know to spot things I maybe missed. Pearce definitely has a way with words and knows how to create an authentic, dreadful atmosphere.
