Bestiary by K-Ming Chang

"I'll marry your father, any man I can ride away from here. The irony: We're the same as Ma. That's what Ma did, marry out of her country, marry out of her body."

Thoughts ~
Bestiary is an enthralling novel! It was beautifully bizarre and moving at the same time. A blending of family saga, mythology, diaspora, queerness, and coming of age story. It follows three generations of a Taiwanese American family who are plagued by the trauma of their immigration journey and the folklore of their homeland.

Strange things begin to happen, daughters growing tiger tales, letters from a grandmother spewing from holes in the ground, relatives with snakes in their bellies. Burried family secrets come to light. Its wild and I couldn't keep away!

I was in awe of how K-Ming Chang incorporated so much into this story. How she explored dispora and transgenerational trauma, and the idea of changing ones destiny was so creative and emotive.

If you enjoy Helen Oyeyemi, Akwaeke Emezi, or Karen Russel's books you may enjoy this too.
