Black Beauty by Anna Sewell

5.0

I cried at the happy bits. I cried at the sad bits. Very cathartic.

I’m proud of myself for understanding nearly everything mentioned related to driving, even if I wasn’t able to exactly picture every type of cart or carriage mentioned.

The reception of this book reminds me a little of Upton Sinclair’s The Jungle ("I aimed for the public's heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach.") for aiming to be a serious animal welfare book meant to compel adults to action but mainly being categorized as children’s fiction. Because Anna Sewell was a woman? 🤔

Reading this around the same time as the Temeraire series, I can really see the parallels.
