This was a book of two halves for me. The first half is slow paced and super heavy world and character building. That said, this is needed and the characters were so interesting I didn’t mind. There is a large cast of characters so I think you need that time to get to know everyone.

Our two main POV characters I really liked and the slow burn between them is perfect.

You really see Mary in particular grow and come into her own which I really loved.

The second half of this book is action packed as Mary finds herself caught between pirates, pirate hunters and the navy while trying to find her mother .. then add in other realms, magic, spirit style beings.. not to mention a deadly stretch of sea and holy moly does the second half of the book pack a punch
