Time to Shine by Rachel Reid

5.0

[I received a digital arc for an honest review]

Time to Shine by Rachel Reid is the newest standalone hockey holiday romance. Landon Stackhouse is excited to have been called up from the AHL to play for Calgary as the back up goalie. He isn’t allowing himself to get too comfortable as his time with the team isn’t permanent but his new teammate Casey Hicks isn’t getting the memo. Casey is thrilled to offer Landon somewhere to live and is even more surprised how much he likes the man. But Landon is very hesitant to open up to the cheery Casey. He’s even more hesitant to be open to the idea that there could be more between them. Casey refuses to give up on Landon though and hopes that his positivity and willingness to try can move them towards something wonderful.

I absolutely adored this book. Casey was everything I wanted in the non-stop ray of sunshine. He has his demons of course, but never allows anything to keep him down for long. He sees something in Landon that he wants to explore and refuses to accept anything less than friendship even though he learned early on he wanted more. I loved his absolute devotion to his family and his teammates, especially Landon.

Casey lit Landon up, filling all his dark caverns with sunshine. He made him happy in a way that Landon had forgotten was possible.

Landon Stackhouse was Casey’s opposite and I enjoyed him just as much. His past colors his experience as a hockey player and as well as a son. He doesn’t know what to do with the attention Casey showers him in but learns to appreciate the sweet selfless man. Landon allows himself to open up to Casey in so many ways.

Landon shoved him lightly. “You’re so weird.”
“Nope. Just lucky.”
Scientifically speaking, Landon knew it wasn’t actual sunshine that was filling his chest, but it sure felt like it.

I devoured this book. I adored Landon and Casey as individuals and together as they built from a friendship into more. Yes, there is a holiday aspect to the story but I feel like this book is so much more than a typical holiday romance. There is a good amount of hockey but it blends with the story building that it doesn’t take away from the character and plot development. With an excellent supporting cast of family members and hockey teammates our MCs had a system in place to help them explore their budding relationship.

5 stars for Casey and Landon taking teammates to the next level.
