Set before and during the Japanese civil war of the 1850s, this well-researched book really takes you back in time and gives you a glimpse of the lives of the people.

The main character Sachi is engaging and takes you on an emotional journey as she struggles through the war and the very foreign concept of "love".

This was one of those books which you never want to end. Lesley Downer is a gifted writer and I look forward to her future books.
