i was reading this normally up until about page 110, which is where i got really, really bored and decided to skim/speed read the rest of my way through, and i missed nothing of substance. this book was completely boring with such a boring plot.
the writing style was nice when it came to describing physical things in the world. those descriptions were nice. otherwise, it was insufferable to read, and there was nothing of value going on. mara, the fmc, was so unbelievably boring and unlikable. she's obnoxious, self-centered, anxious in a way that makes me (someone with anxiety) so annoyed, and just insufferable. i think zodiac and astrology can be interesting. it's fun. i also tend to avoid certain signs. but she, as a halfway-to-32-year-old woman bases her daily life on horoscopes like a prepubescent teenager and it's embarrassing.
she's psychotic. neurotic. the premise of this book begins with her taking a holiday in vienna and having her fortune told. the psychic starts going into labor and tells mara to lock up shop. so of course a man walks in, who mara assumes is her destiny. she fake reads him a fortune by telling him to show up in her home town at a specific pub on a specific date. needless to say it doesn't work out, which she resigns to accepting after she tries STALKING this man in austria. he's not the ultimate love interest btw, which was laid out clearly early on.
like this woman is insane. she lives by daily horoscopes because she can't make decisions for herself at her big age, stalks a man for months online before attempting it in person, like.
there's so much filler plot that just doesn't make sense and i hate it. also her longtime best friend is p pregnant and already has a baby, and while i'm not a parent myself, i understand how busy new parents can be and how it completely changes your life. mara just couldn't fucking fathom that, for some reason, and was getting so pissed at charlie (her bestie) for not being available to her at all hours of the day. obnoxious. genuinely mara is so unlikable. this book sucked.
