The Fifth to Die by J.D. Barker

5.0

Thank you to Netgalley and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt for providing me with an ARC (my first very first one!) of this book.

This book gave me two nightmares, and I've never had nightmares from a book.

First of all, J.D. Barker is one of my favorite authors, so this review will be slightly biased. Also, one thing I'd encourage a reader to do before diving into this book is to read (or re-read) The Fourth Monkey. I read the first book over a year ago, so I struggled to remember some of the major plot points, unfortunately. Overall, though, I enjoyed this book much, much more than I thought I would!

Barker is the MASTER of suspense. I don't usually struggle to put down a book, but the cliffhangers at the end of certain chapters were incredible. Once I thought I had a twist figured out, it turned out to be something completely different. This book had a tendency to make my skin crawl, but the perspectives changed quickly enough to keep the story going.

I highly recommend this book series to lovers of mysteries filled with lots of suspense. I can't wait for the next book!
