Black Water Sister by Zen Cho
4.0

this book was very different from what i expected it to be. i can’t really elucidate because i don’t want to spoil anything but it was a lot less comic that i was anticipating. it was, in fact, quite melancholy and upsetting at times. it was also meaningful, in reading about the passing of a family member, even one you don’t necessarily know that well.

i enjoyed it a lot, and i would recommend it, but before reading i would recommend looking up content warnings because there’s some pretty heavy shit in here, aside from the obvious death. but yeah, well written, enjoyable and zen cho is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors.

as mentioned in my review of spirits abroad, i find the religion, spirituality and mythology of other cultures intensely interesting and cho always does so well at integrating these elements into her novels. very impressive, love learning about it!
