Beasts of Burden: Animal Rites by Evan Dorkin
5.0
I really didn't realize what I was in for with this comic until I finished the first story. If you're an animal lover you're either going to love this series or hate it. I recommend you avoid it if you're triggered by scenes of intense blood or gore, or especially anything involving cruelty to animals.
That being said, because I care about animals so much, the stories of these dogs (and a cat!) really effected me. They truly are horror stories that could only be experienced by neighbourhood animals. At the same time, the victims are real enough that you feel for them either way - and the monsters terrifying in their own right.
I love the mythology that slowly builds up, going from a single Wise Dog to an entire society of them, like the Watchers of Buffy lore. In many ways the series also reminds me of Watership Down, except of course with more zombie animals and the like. I also love the artwork - Thompson's colours and style really give the series a unique look, and help many scenes look incredibly gruesome without putting me off actually looking at them.
I am looking forward to reading the next instalment of this, even if I do dread the poor animals that may suffer in its pages. All I can hope is that our heroes are able to, at the very least, give them peace.
