The Dinner Party and Other Stories by Joshua Ferris
4.0
I received an advanced e-copy of this book courtesy of Little, Brown via NetGalley. Though I am always grateful for complimentary books, such treats in no way impact the following review
Joshua Ferris' debut short-story collection, THE DINNER PARTY, reads much like a modern-day Flannery O'Connor. Ferris shows himself here to be a comic master, packing his stories full of unseen twists and biting irony. The first two stories--"The Dinner Party" and "The Valetudinarian"--are probably the best, but almost every story in the collection has some kind of delicious moment, be it a hard-earned punchline, a touch of wisdom, or a moving scene between two strangers.
THE DINNER PARTY comes highly recommended, at least by yours truly. It is one of the finest collections I've read in quite some time.
