Find Me in the Rain by Pru Schuyler

Missed the mark

I had to push myself to finish this one. There were so many points I almost marked it as a DNF and here’s why: *spoilers below*

1. The characters were far too boring. There was no depth to them at all. We know Laura is a mom, has family issues, annnnd that is pretty much it? Alec plays hockey and missed Laura. There was a lot of room for more character and emotional exploration across the board.

2. There were a lot of major plot points just brushed aside with no regard. THE letter? Why is no one more concerned about what happened to it. And Alec’s entire interaction with his family felt shallow. There was a heavy focus on Laura and Char getting dressed up where that could have been cut down to offer more room for plot exploration.

3. It was all too easy. Laura felt this deep earth shattering pain when she was left the first time and while I understand they have a connection but she went from resenting to falling at his feet again with no question? It caused the story to feel as though it was lacking the authenticity needed for this situation.

4. The focus on the sexuality of a child. I have no problem with LGBTQ+ stories but focusing on Laura’s 5 year old son to drive home a topic just felt ICK. Had it been anyone else or maybe even had Jack been older it wouldn’t have been so weird to hyper focus on that topic but at that age it just felt wrong. Laura’s reactions however were completely justified and I appreciated the aggressive defensive stance she and Alec took but if I’m being honest the whole scenario threw me out of the story since it felt forced.

5. There were quite a few grammatical issues that popped up. Nothing crazy but enough for me to have to stop my flow of reading to go back and reread parts. This one was minor but for anyone who this may be more of an issue for I felt the need to mention it.
