A Heart of Blood and Ashes by Milla Vane

5.0

Fantastic. Beautiful fantasy romance of endurance, perseverance, and inner strength. I’m not a big fantasy romance reader but this is everything I want in a romance.

She is the heir to a kingdom that only passes through the female line. He believes her to be responsible for luring his parents to their death at the hands of her father and brothers. Having been locked in a tower, her existence kept secret all her life, he learns she has the same taste for vengeance against her family as he and convinces him that marrying and impregnating her is far more vengeful and valuable than killing her. On the journey to his kingdom he and his personal guard slowly discover all the reasons for her familial hatred including but not limited to her physical disabilities at the hands of her father and brothers. Her wonder at a world she has never truly seen, her discovery at learning how to see and how to hear because she’s never had context is charming. She wins them all over in time—including the MMC though, still blinded by anger and grief, he stubbornly refuses to fully open his eyes hampering her ability to reveal the full truth of his mother and herself.

The reveal and the grovel on the part of the MMC from having dug the hole ever deeper is spectacularly sweet. The writing is beautiful and at times heart wrenching but so satisfying in the end. HEA. Without a doubt moving on to book 2.
