To be honest, I’m not sure why this book won a Nobel Prize and I feel like maybe I am stupid because I didn’t really understand it.
I enjoyed the first part of the book, it was like witnessing a car crash, you don’t enjoy it but you want to keep reading to find out what happens next. I took a lot of notes in part 1 and I could relate a lot of it to society.
Part 2 was… confusing… and weird… and it sort of died down from there. There wasn’t much I could make out of the meaning behind part two other than people like this exists but I feel like I had failed to see the point of part 2.
Part 3 was boring. I found part 2 had killed majority of the curiosity I had for the story and its characters and by part 3, I no longer cared about the characters nor the story, I found myself speed reading just to finish the book so I could be put out of misery. I didn’t care what happened in the end, though it was predictable, and probably the only thing I really got out of this last part was death is not a bad thing, which is something I’ve been agreeing to for years already, so it wasn’t really anything new or profound for me.
It might be the translation or I am just not the audience to appreciate this sort of literature, but I didn’t find the book was beautifully written either and some sentences were quite weird.
2.5/5 stars because I did enjoy the first part (against my will). I can’t recommend this as a good read but I will recommend people to read it to make up their own minds about it.
