God: A Human History by Reza Aslan

3.0

This book gave me a valuable perspective on the evolution of religion throughout human history and how people have made sense of God through the world around them and their lived experience.

As a Christian, this book was eye opening and it helped me make sense of questions I had about how human civilisations that existed before the biblical Israelites thought about or interacted with God and how we make sense of God has mirrored changes in human development. It also offered me news ways to think about how I see God manifesting himself through people in world today.

I will say, even some of historical information presented in this book feels as though it shared through the lens of the authors perspective and experience with different religious transitions. That is not a bad thing, we all have a perspective and there’s really no such thing as objectivity when it comes to faith. But I would advise the reader to understand these elements and keep this in mind as you read.

All in all, I’m glad I picked it up. I wouldn’t recommend to EVERYONE, but just do your research to see if it’s for you and you mind find some helpful information or perspective in it.
