Wuthering Heights
by Emily Brontë
This might be one of my new favourite books ever. I always loved watching adaptations of this book growing up but had never read it through from beginning to end until now. It was fascinating to see how ahead of her time Brontë was in terms of her themes. She navigates class difference and racial prejudice in such a compelling way and in a way that feels so unique. I loved the gothic feel and discomfort she made me feel at times when describing the moors and the ghost tale that becomes of Cathy and Heathcliff. It also is perfectly paced in that I didn’t want to put it down when I picked it up, especially towards the last 40% of the novel. I also loved that when things get really dark near the end and it feels unbearably sad, you are suddenly taken out of it and all is made right. This is done in a subtle way that mirrors the life the main characters should have had if things had been different and there was no bitterness or vengeful desires from Earnshaw and Heathcliff and the Lintons. Overall, I see why it’s such a beloved classic and I will come back to it again and again.
