The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

4.0

This book centers around Alice Crewe, a girl whose grandmother, Althea Proserpine, is the author of a fairy tale book called Tales Of The Hinterland. Early on, Alice's mother, Ella Proserpine, is kidnapped and Alice ends up having to enlist Ellery Finch's help to find her way to the Hinterland to rescue her mother. She finds out many things about her and her mother; for one thing, she is a character in one of her grandmother's stories and her "mother" actually took her out of the story into the real world. She must find her way back to the real world before she is stuck in the Hinterland for good, either in her own story or as an "ex-Story", an ex-storybook character.

The book is the first of two books in the series; the book Tales Of The Hinterland was also published as the third book. I really liked the book, and I plan on reading the other two books by this author. I found so many quotable parts in this book that I had a hard time deciding which ones to use as my favorite quotes. Usually, I only choose one favorite quote, but this time I could only narrow it down to two, so I used both. I would highly recommend this book; I just wish it is also a movie. I think it would make a good movie, but I did some research on it and, although it may be in production, there is currently no movie. So, for now, we just have the books to take us back to the fairy tale world that encompasses both make-believe characters and real life, both worlds brutal and unforgiving in their own way.
