I found The Golden Compass consistently fantastical, but only occasionally marvelous. Its atmosphere and worldbuilding are rich and imaginative, and the dialogue—particularly that of Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter—was outstanding, really bringing those characters to life for me. The opening chapters and the ending were mesmerizing, though I felt the plot lost momentum through much of the middle—perhaps because most of the characters introduced during that section felt only tangential to the story’s central conflict.
