This is a really well written biography of Virginia Johnson and William Masters, who did a lot of good research into the physiology of sex in the 1950s. I remember the medical school lecture by the painfully shy anatomy demonstrator about the stages of orgasm (she couldn’t say “penis” without blushing, I was genuinely concerned she might die) but this is the first I knew about the research that mapped out those stages. Genuinely fascinating stuff.
Unfortunately, their work became somewhat less rigorous in later years and they offered gay conversion therapy, spread inaccurate information about HIV transmission routes etc and Masters was clearly a really unpleasant and controlling man.
